Why Urdu months look different
Urdu-speaking communities across South Asia primarily follow the Hijri (Islamic lunar) calendar for religious dates, written here in the Nastaliq script alongside their English transliteration. A Hijri year runs about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so months like Ramadan shift earlier each year rather than falling on a fixed date. Alongside the religious calendar, this page also tracks a few dates significant to Urdu literature itself — like Iqbal Day and Ghalib's Urs — since the Urdu calendar isn't only about faith, it's about a shared literary culture too.

Meet the poets
Behind every Sher of the Day
Mirza Ghalib
1797 – 1869
Delhi's most quoted poet, Ghalib wrote in both Urdu and Persian during the twilight of the Mughal era. His ghazals turn heartbreak, doubt, and everyday frustration into some of the most repeated lines in the language — often only fully appreciated after several readings.
Allama Iqbal
1877 – 1938
Poet-philosopher and the intellectual voice behind the idea of Pakistan, Iqbal wrote in Urdu and Persian about selfhood, striving, and the awakening of a community. His verse is taught in classrooms across South Asia to this day.
Mir Taqi Mir
1723 – 1810
Often called Khuda-e-Sukhan, "the god of poetry," Mir helped shape the ghazal into the form later poets like Ghalib inherited. His work is quieter and more melancholic — poetry of loss, written in some of the earliest literary Urdu.

Frequently asked questions
Why does this date differ from my mosque's announcement?
This site calculates dates using the tabular Islamic calendar, a fixed formula. Many mosques confirm the new month by local moon sighting instead, which can shift dates by a day. Follow your local authority for religious observance.
Where do the couplets come from?
Each "Sher of the Day" is drawn from classical Urdu poets — Ghalib, Iqbal, and Mir — whose work has long been in the public domain, with an English transliteration and translation for readers still learning the script.
Is this site only for religious dates?
No. Alongside Islamic observances, it also marks dates significant to Urdu literary heritage, like Iqbal Day and Ghalib's Urs.
How does the Hijri ↔ Gregorian date converter work?
It uses the same tabular calculation as the rest of the site — pick a date in either calendar and it instantly shows the equivalent, no internet lookup required.
Why do I see city buttons under Prayer Times?
If you'd rather not share your location, tap a city — including major cities across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the Gulf — for its live prayer times instead.
What is the Rajab date today?
Rajab is the 7th Hijri month. Visit Islamic Date Today to see whether we're currently in Rajab, plus the exact day and how many days remain in the month, updated live.
What is the Shaban date today?
Sha'ban is the 8th Hijri month, the one right before Ramadan. Islamic Date Today shows the current Hijri month live, so you can check at a glance whether it's Sha'ban.
Do you cover Ramadan and Eid dates for future years?
Yes — see our Ramadan Calendar 2027 and Islamic Calendar 2027 pages, plus a full month-by-month 2027 calendar.
