How the Islamic date is determined
The Islamic calendar is lunar: each of its twelve months begins with a new crescent moon, and a full Hijri year runs about 354 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That gap is why Ramadan, Eid, and every other Islamic date shift earlier each year rather than staying fixed. This page uses the tabular (arithmetic) method to work out today's Hijri date instantly, the same approach used throughout Urdu Calendar, rather than waiting on an actual sighting of the moon.
In practice, that means the date here will almost always match your local mosque, but can occasionally sit a day off right at the boundary of a new month — most noticeably at the start of Ramadan or Shawwal. If precise religious observance is what you need, always confirm the start of a month with your local moon-sighting authority; this page is best used as a quick, reliable reference the rest of the month.
